Serving with Skill and Heart by Graham Schardt

The Ridge, like other local churches and non-profits, relies on empowered volunteers to implement the work of its mission. Everyone is encouraged to find a serving role that suits their talents and contributes to the needs of the church. The areas I work with in Creative Worship & Tech Arts include Worship/Music Team, Audio Team, Visuals, Camera, Lighting, and Artwork/Design. Sometimes people are intimidated by the specialized skills that might be required to run a camera or the slides, but if you have any interest in one of these areas, don't hesitate to ask me about it. We are happy to train volunteers and help you ease into the roles that might involve more specialized skills.

Actually, skill is only part of the equation. If you bring a serving heart, you are already half way there! King David led with both his heart and his skills. In Psalm 78:72 we read: "And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them". David offered his skills but also contributed a healthy heart of worship. Without this integrity of heart, his skills may not have been as effective anyway, especially as a leader.

So, if you're unsure about having 'just the right skills' to serve in some of these areas, focus first on bringing a willing heart of worship. I believe God can and will lead you from there. Many of the skills you might need can then be acquired through training and experience.

Contact me if you want to continue this conversation and consider a new volunteer role. And if you have already begun to pursue this balance of skill and heart in a serving capacity, post a comment about your experience.
