Leadership is one of the most over-used and over-wrought
topics these days – books, blogs, and conferences – you name it.
Yet for all that, there are a couple staggering realities I think
we must come to grips with in our “followership” with Jesus.
First, we must wrestle with the possibility that our more
typical leadership development programs might actually be programs that recruit
and train volunteers. A volunteer is someone who executes someone else’s
vision – a genius with a thousand helpers? A leader is someone with a
vision of their own, a listening and affirming work of the Spirit that finds
it’s sending through a discerning community of other believers.
Today I am left to ponder that when Jesus talked about the
need for “leaders for the harvest” – he was declaring the kingdom gospel – our
leadership lived in the everyday of God’s kingdom – leadership listening to the
Spirit and sent IN mission with Jesus in a lost and hurting world so loved by
God.
What do you think? Who might you be becoming?
