Tom's Thoughts on Mission Navajo (Daily Activities)

Much of my time was spent in one of the class buildings (Lucero Building) doing a lot of pre-painting prep work: scraping off old paint, spackling, general cleanup. And finally the painting itself. We painted one large central room, plus two smaller classrooms. Mark Gibson and I teamed up on much of this work. Mark was the drywall repairman extraordinaire - a real servant and workhorse. Hats-off to you, Mark!

Greg and Gary worked on removal and replacement of two water heaters, which sounds like an equally big task as our painting work. I didn't see much of them other than to admire their finished work.

We did spend one afternoon as a little bit of free time, when we visited "the canyon", an area near Janelle's cousin's place. I went on the trip last year and passed on the horseback-riding opportunity. However, I resolved this time around to ride one of the horses. You have to understand that I have kind of a longstanding, irrational fear of the beasts, stemming in part from getting a swift kick in the thigh from a pony when I was a kid. Never walk behind those ornery guys! Anyway, I'm happy to report that I did overcome that fear, take that risk, and literally "got back on that horse". It helped a lot that Syd and Kateland put me on "Dolly", a real mellow, easy-to-ride horse. Even did a brief gallop.

I also enjoyed watching Kateland and Noah, Janelle's niece and nephew, show off their riding skills. They did a few practice barrel-racing runs. They're pretty skilled!

Daily devotions were great; just a great way to "center" and start the day off on the right note, and set the tone why were doing this work.
